Description
For years I have been working with the concept of creating an environment for some of my favorite quotes. This is how my line of Spirit House came to be.
The piece I am presenting here is made from encaustic (hot wax) and photographs.
The handmade book contains a calligraphically lettered poem by Marilyn Monroe. As we all
know, she certainly was a woman with a pre-determined point of view that was also
objectified and ravished by men. I used an old photo to highlight the book cover and the
string that is embedded in the tree line signifies the concept of measurement and how
often women are measured by their beauty, their looks, or what they lack.
This is a dimensional piece with photos, encaustic, and a cubby for my hand made book that contains a calligraphically lettered poem by Marilyn Monroe. The words inside the book:
A woman is often measured
by things she cannot change….
she is measured
by the way her body curves
or doesn’t curve.
She is measured by inches . . . ages and numbers.
and by outside things that don’t ever
add up to what she is on the inside.
. . . and so, If a woman is to be measured
Let her be measured by who she is . . .
. . . and who she is trying to become.
